GNT 5000s

This is a budget subwoofer set, that includes two 6.5 watt satellites and a 19 watt subwoofer. It can be found for as cheap as 40 dollars. They have an average non distinctive design. The subwoofer looks like it's pretty stout and well put together for this price range. The tweeters though are abnormally light, and average sized.

The performance is overall quite good for this price range. These speakers have an exceptional level of silence, there is no real perceptible hiss. The tweeters have a nice dynamic range as well. At max volume there was zero distortion.

On the con side these speakers are not for someone that wants the loudest speakers on the block, as they are more then half the wattage of the rest. For most people though they are 'plenty loud'.

The subwoofer does not have as much of a penetrating thump when compared to the rest of the speakers in this review at similar volume levels but it is okay. If you max out the main volume and the subwoofer volume their is a very slight rattle that most would not notice, it seemed to be coming from the area where all the jacks are plugged in. Seems to me something needs to be tightened. Fortunately the whole unit is held together by two well positioned screws. Unfortunately you need an extra long philips screwdriver to get at them, which I could not locate. So I will update this review if this is fixable. If not this is still a good system which beats the sound quality of anything in its price range and many higher priced sets including the Microsoft DSS80 system. (updated 8/25/00 )
